Antique 'pulp fiction' booklet with the first Dutch translation of 'Lot No. 249' (1892); a short gothic horror story by Arthur Conan Doyle (1869-1930). Sales price was 20 cents. Cf. Schouten 1302.
¶ The main character Abercrombie Smith, an athlete from the University of Oxford, notices a strange series of events surrounding Edward Bellingham, an Egyptology student who owns many ancient Egyptian artifacts, including a mummy.
'Lot No. 249' was written during a period of great European interest in Egyptian culture, known as Egyptomania. Although resurrected mummies had previously appeared in English literature, Doyle's story was the first to portray one as dangerous and has had a significant influence on subsequent horror fiction and films.
