The first quarter of the year 1893 of this Hague and South Holland newspaper. Newspapers used to be HUGE. This is therefore a very large coffee table book with a unique glimpse into the daily life of the people of The Hague in the 1890s, towards the turn of the century.
¶ Contains announcements about, among other things, the sale of houses and villas (including Helmersstraat 102; Laan van Meerdervoort 34 and Bierstraat 13. Zwarteweg 70 was auctioned for Fl.3800. A house with rear exit for a horse and carriage cost Fl.9500). The nostalgic advertisements are a 19th century version of eBay; For example, a Blue Eskimo Jacket is offered for Fl.50,-; the new price of which, according to the seller, was 80 guilders. Also advertising for a remedy against IMPOTENTIA and an Elixir to live longer.
Which was not an unnecessary luxury given the recurring section 'Disasters and Accidents' (including the tragic report of the KNIL soldier G. Huizer who died in his home in Barneveld due to the cold). Furthermore, a lecture by Rev. Pierson van Zetten on the issue of PROSTITUTION, telegrams from 'Persbureau Reuter' and the 'Hardrijderijen' of the Skating Federation, mentioning a certain JAAP EDEN.
On February 18 we find the obituary for the mother of LOUIS COUPERUS: "Op den 15n februari overleed tot mijne diepe droefheid, mijne geliefde Echtgenoote Catharina Geertruida Couperus, geb. Jonkvrouw Reijnst - Mr. I.R. Couperus".
Rebound by master bookbinder Hans Zegveld from Nijmegen, who completely overhauled the bookbinding, based on - and in the spirit of the old binding (the remains of which are included). Guarantee for hours of historical reading pleasure.
