¶ 'De Emmaüsgangers' is considered the most famous forgery in Dutch art history. The work was bought as a special 'Vermeer' via top collector Dirk Hannema in 1937 by the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen (just before the Rijksmuseum could lay their hands on it. The work was proudly applauded by art critic Bram Hammacher in this special edition of the Maandblad Beeldende Kunst and even the famous Dutch poet PC Boutens was asked to write a praise poem.
Only after the Second World War, after a confession by the master forger Han van Meegeren (1889-1947) who also sold false paintings to 'Reichsmarschall' Hermann Göring, the 'Vermeer' was exposed as a very clever falsification (by Van Meegeren).
