Book Week gift 1957. Originally published anonymously as a novella; a story set during the Second World War about the Jews in Camp Westerbork, by the Dutch writer Jacques Presser (1899-1970).
¶ For the first time, the gift was bound in 'Fabroleen'. a new binding material of Proost and Brandt. Circulation: 150,000 copies. The booklet was given away free with the purchase of Fl 4.50 worth of books. The author's name could be filled in and sent on a separate enclosed competition form (a 'prijsvraagkaart' that is often missing). Cf. De Bakker p. [29]; Blom p.66.
Other authors who had submitted manuscripts were Henri van Booven, Johan Fabricius, Dr. Helène Nolthenius, Theun de Vries and André Defresne (whose story 'Het gehucht' was published as a 'Boekenweekgeschenk' the following year).
