With expressionist cover design by B. van Vlymen (= the Dutch artist Bernard van Vlijmen, 1895-1977); a German soldier with helmet seen from the back, in black, white, blue and red.

¶ Erich Maria Remarque fought on the Western Front during the First World War until he was wounded by a grenade in Belgium in 1917. He processed his experiences in 'All Quiet on the Western Front', published in January 1929, 'The Way Back' (1931) and 'Three Comrades' (1937).
