Novel by the Belgian writer Ernest Claes (1885-1968) about a bon vivant who worked as a craftsman on the homesteads and monasteries in the region of Diest, Averbode and Zichem (Flemish Brabant, Belgium). Illustrated with black and white drawings by Felix Timmermans (1886-1947). Hardback first edition in half-parchment.
¶ Wannes Raps probably really existed (his death in the night of 9 to 10 October 1899 is allegedly mentioned in the archives of Diest. At that time (late 19th century) he was a kind of entertainer who passed on the news and stories from place to place, sometimes in the form of ballads or satire. In the 1970s, a Brabant folk band of the same name was active.
