¶ Professor Gerard van Hamel (1842-1917) published this introduction three years after the introduction of the Criminal Code. His ideas not only had a major influence on the development of criminal law science at the time, but many of them are still current today. His standard work (still invaluable as a source for the study of the history of criminal law), went through four editions.
