Condition: Fragile - with wear, hinge on spine cracked, small contemporary signature on flyleaf, foxing.

The collected works (2 volumes in one binding) of the Dutch Renaissance writer Pieter Corneliszoon Hooft (1581-1647); "Poëzie en Toneelwerk". With table of contents and 'bijvoegsels en verbeteringen'.

Hardback edition in (despite the damage still) beautiful antique binding with spine of red leather with gilded title and decoration; the boards covered with decorative paper.

¶ Contains i.a. de Tafelspelen, Achilles en Polyxena, Geeraerdt van Velsen, Ware-nar en Isabella. With his debut collection 'Emblemata amatoria' (1611), PC Hooft introduced the genres of sonnets and love songs to the Dutch audience. Simon Vestdijk called Hooft a 'prosa genius'. Established in 1947, the prestigious P.C. Hooft Prize is named after him.
