A. Winkler Prins - Geïllustreerde Encyclopaedie: Woordenboek voor wetenschap en kunst, beschaving en nijverheid - Amsterdam - C.L. Brinkman - 1870/1881 - 1st edition - 15 volumes - Half leather bindings - 16,5 x 24,5 cm.
Condition: Vulnerable, with heavy wear all around; stamps, the plates of the (16th) picture volume are partially and fairly chaotically bound between the quires of this set. Nevertheless an attractive collectors item.
The very first Dutch encyclopedia was edited and largely written by the writer, poet, politician, pastor and freemason Anthony Winkler Prins (1817-1908). Illustrated with black and white reproductions. Text clearly printed in two columns.
¶ From the end of the 19th century until around 1995, "The Great Winkler Prins" was the most authoritative reference work for the Netherlands. This is the rare first edition in 15 bookbindings with marbled boards.
