¶ Attractive antiquarian print of the Jewish sacred building. Visible are i.a. the location of the columns Jachin and Boaz and the square space of the Holy of Holies (indicated with the letter X). Herod I (Ascalonita) the Great (c. 73 BC - Jericho, 4 BC) started around 20-19 BC. an ambitious rebuilding and extension of the temple complex. According to John 2:20, it had been under construction for already 46 years in the time of Jesus. When the temple was finally completed, it was considered one of the most magnificent architectural complexes of the Roman Empire.
