Original copper engraving (by Matthys Pool (1670-1732?) With bird's-eye view of the rebuilt Temple of Solomon. Published in Het Algemeen Groot Historisch, Oordeelkundig, Chronologisch, Geografisch, En Letterlijk Naam-En Woord-Boek Van Den Gantschen H. Bijbel. Dienende tot de gedenk-stukken der Jooden en andere oudheden [...] (1725) of the French Benedictine monk Antoine Augustin Calmet (1672-1757).

¶ Attractive antiquarian print of the Jewish sacred building. Visible are i.a. the columns Jachin and Boaz and the curtain for the Holy of Holies. Herod I (Ascalonita) the Great (c. 73 BC - Jericho, 4 BC) started around 20-19 BC. an ambitious rebuilding and extension of the temple complex. When the building was finally completed, it was considered one of the most beautiful architectural complexes of the Roman Empire. The building on this engraving, however, is designed in the western style of the 17th century (with influences from the late Renaissance).
