Early Dutch translation (by Lambert van den Bos, 1620-1698) of the masterpiece El ingenioso hidalgo Don Quijote de la Mancha (1605-1615) by the Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra (1547-1616).
Illustrated with 25 prints (the title engraving in this edition is by Lucas Scherm and the 24 copper engravings are after Savry). Bound in two 18th century half leather bindings with gilded title vignette on the spine.
¶ Cf. Buisman 363; Dronckers/Waller 396; Narratief proza 59. The first Dutch translation appeared in Dordrecht in 1657, with illustrations by the printer Jacobus Savry, and was also the first illustrated edition in the world. Incidentally, it appeared quite late, 40 years after the first complete 2-part edition had appeared in Spain (1617). By way of comparison, the French complete translation dates from 1618 and the English one from 1620.
