The book deals with the tower telescope, the spectrograph, solar radiation, wavelengths of the Fraunhofer lines, infrared to ultraviolet, measuring the light distribution with the microphotometer, the quantitative composition of the Sun, sunspots, the eleven-year cycle, observations during a complete solar eclipse, the corona and the interior of the Sun.
¶ Belgian-born astrophysicist Marcel Minnaert (1893-1970) was a pioneer in the field of the spectroscopic research of the Sun. In 1940 he published the groundbreaking Photometric Atlas of the Solar Spectrum (the so-called 'Utrecht Atlas') with Gerard Mulders and Jakob Houtgast. He also became known for his three-part series De natuurkunde van 't vrije veld (1937-1942). An asteroid and a crater on the moon are named after him.
