Debut novel by the Dutch writer Willem van Toorn (1935-). Cover with photography by Paul van den Bos. Hardback first edition. SIGNED as 'Willem'. So not with his usual signature. However, the personal dedication is in the author's handwriting. Dated 'August 81'.
¶ On August 22, 1964, the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf unleashed a vendetta against the writer, because of this book: "Het Drentse dorp Dwingeloo staat voor schut. Het heeft, met zijn inwoners het twijfelachtige genoegen als onderwerp te dienen van een sombere roman, waarin achterlijkheid, huichelachtigheid en kamertjeszonden ferme rollen spelen. Schrijver van het boek is een Amsterdamse jongeman, die [...] een tijdje onderwijzer is geweest in de Dwingeloose buurtschap Lhee (in het boek noemt hij zichzelf Oskar Lee)".
Cf. Hazeu p. 20 [transl.]: For a good understanding it is necessary to note here that the name Dwingeloo does not appear in the book and that the names of the inhabitants of this place cannot be read in it. The writer naturally denied all allegations, but the Provincial Rural Library, which had branches subsidized by the municipalities everywhere in Drenthe (also in Dwingeloo), did not purchase the novel.
