Historical novel by the Dutch writer Simon Vestdijk (1898-1971) about the 16th-century [Greek] painter El Greco (1541-1614) at the Spanish court and his relationship with Philip II of Spain. Text in Dutch. Hardback edition.
¶ The first edition was published in 1937. According to the bibliography of M. Grijzen, the 2nd and 3rd printings were published in 1938 and a fourth in 1950. Our copy, however (without a print reference) with the year 1939 and with the dust jacket of the 'editio princeps' in design by 'Van 't Hof' (On the blurb we find 'Narcissus op vrijersvoeten' from 1938).
An unknown fourth edition?. Not in the catalogs of Aioloz and Hinderickx & Winderickx.
