View of the village centre, church and castle in Boxmeer after drawings by Jan de Beyer (1703-1780), manufactured by the Dutch engraver Hendrik Spilman (1721-1784). Two engravings of 10.5 x 8 cm on a sheet of 19 x 24 cm. Coming from Het verheerlykt Nederland of Kabinet van hedendaagsche gezigten (1745).
¶ Boxmeer Castle was originally build in the 13th century. During the Eighty Years' War, the Duke of Alva had it confiscated. The 18th century parts have largely been preserved. The church depicted is the Sint-Petrusbasiliek (St. Peter's Basilica), where the so-called 'Bloedwonder' (Blood Miracle) took place in the crypt under the church around 1400, an event that made Boxmeer a place of pilgrimage.
