¶ Around 1900, Van Looy from Haarlem - publishing heavily - was one of the most widely read writers in the Netherlands and in those years was highly valued within the circles of the 'Tachtigers', such as by Albert Verwey, who published Van Looy's debut in the literary magazine De Nieuwe Gids (without informing the debutant!). After his death, however, oblivion quickly set in.
