Mary Baldwin - Van school gestuurd. Vrij naar 't Engelsch door Claudine Bienfait - Zalt-Bommel - H.J. van de Garde & Co. - [1905] - 1st edition - [6], [300] pp - Cloth binding - 16,5 x 23 cm.
Condition: Good - with wear and discolouration.
Antique book for girls from around 1900 with a Dutch adaptation of a story (about a rebellious schoolgirl) by the British writer May Baldwin (1862-1950). Illustrated with black and white plates by Harold Copping (1863-1932).
¶ Hardback edition in Art Nouveau binding by unknown artist (the binding executed by C.H.F. Wöhrmann & Zonen - Zutphen). The designer (perhaps Theo Neuhuys?) thought the translator Claudine Bienfait (1873-1960) was more important than the author, because it is her name that appears on the cover.
Rare item. cf. Beijers (1965) #186 for another title by the same author and the same publisher. Not in Braches; Not in Aardse; Not in Struik; Not in Storm van Leeuwen; Not in 'De jas van het woord' (1989). NB This copy was apparently given as a 'Sinterklaas' present; with dated dedication: "Als aandenken; van / Tante Jet / 5 Dec. 1905 / [Name]" in beautiful contemporary handwriting.
