Jappe Gruelt van Molcquerum, Poppesz. - Spiegel No. 9: Etienne Legèr des Hautes Culottes - [Amsterdam] - [No publ.] - [1804] - 1st edition - Print on paper - 14 x 22 cm.
Condition: Good.
Hand-coloured etching of two standing men with their hands in their pockets after a drawing by Jacob Smies (1746-1833), engraved by Daniël Veelwaard (1766-1851). Taken from 'De spiegel in veertig vertoogen: een weekblad' (1804).
Two types of trousers from the late 18th century are presented here: those of a (gentlemen?) farmer from the Netherlands and a French officer with high trousers (wearing glasses and a hat). A copy of this print is kept in the Amsterdam Rijksmuseum.
¶ A short note was originally printed with the picture (included here in photocopy), in which the author indicates that he himself modeled for the farmer: "daar ik geene reden hebbe, om mij voor mijn uiterlijk voorkomen of kleeding te schamen, geef ik het prentjen geheel ter dispositie van het Committé" [= "since I have no reason to be ashamed of my appearance or clothing, I give these pictures entirely at the disposal of the editors."]. According to the letter, the artist Jacob Smies appears to be a cousin of Jappe.
