¶ The Southern Netherlandish Baroque painter Peter Paul (Pieter Pauwel) Rubens (1577-1640) was also a draftsman, tapestry designer and diplomat. After his training with three Flemish painters, he worked i.a. at the court of Mantua, the Archdukes Albert and Isabella of Brussels. He painted many altarpieces with the help of a large studio in Antwerp. Inspired by the art of Antiquity and the Renaissance, he used many mythological motifs in his art. Titian of the Venetian School in particular was an example for him.
