Dutch adaptation of Die Schweizer Familie Robinson (1812), a 19th century Robinsonade based on the famous adventure book and fictional travelogue by Daniel Defoe (1660-1731). Illustrated with 8 lithographs in COLOUR (chromolithographs by Emrik & Binger). Hardback edition in green binding with gilt decoration.
¶ Cf. Buijnsters Lust en Leering p. 246; NCC gives 1874 as the year of publication. The Reformed preacher and writer Johann David Wyss (1743-1818) from Switzerland wrote this story for his children between 1794 and 1798, initially without envisioning publication. The first Dutch translation appeared in 1813. This is a rare edition in the short version by Johan Jacob Antonie Goeverneur (1809-1889).
Our copy was traditionally restored by master bookbinder Hans Zegveld from Nijmegen. Inlaid as a bookmark, is a cut to shape antique postcard with a romantic lithographed illustration of a rider on horseback with a trumpet (size approx. 9 x 13 cm; dated around 1900).
