Antiquarian picture book with an early 19th century edition of the adventures of Monsieur Cryptogame by the Swiss cartoonist Rodolphe Töpffer (1799-1846). Illustrated with black and white wood engravings (executed by Amédee Charles Henri vicomte de Noé).

Hardback edition in beautiful binding with gilt decoration and gilt edges of what is considered to be the FIRST COMIC STRIP STORY. Cf. Tot volle waschdom p. 59; Matla PRIKK.

¶ The cartoon first appeared as a serial in the magazine L'Illustration in 1845. Translations into English and German soon followed. In 1858 J.J.A. Goeverneur adapted the first Dutch version ('Reizen en avonturen van mijnheer Prikkebeen').
