Condition: Good - with some wear; rust spots; some underlining here and there and (meaningful) notes with blue pencil (erasable). Adhesive residue (lacquer?) at the bottom of the back cover.
Antique book with Dutch translation of the first part (in two sections) of an (originally German) overview of important technical inventions and discoveries. Illustrated with black and white engravings as well as some lithographed sepia plates. With table of contents. Hardcover edition with title and decoration in gold stamp on the spine.
¶ 6 stand-alone parts were published. This first part already contains the nicest innovations such as the invention of paper, TYPOGRAPHY, copper- and steel engravings, Lithography, Photography, gunpowder and firearms (cannons), the Lightning Rod, Electricity, the Telegraph, Telescope and Microscope, BALLOONS, the Steam Engine, Railroads, Steamboats, etc.
On p. 85-87 we find the spectacular story of the English parachuting pioneer Robert Cocking (1776-1837) who, with a parachute in the shape of an inverted umbrella, stepped out of a hot air balloon at an altitude of 3,500 feet (= over a kilometer), only to reach the surface of the earth within a minute and a half; "completely crushed".
