¶ In 1562, a new Bible translation for refugee Reformed Christians was published in Emden, Germany; consisting of a translation from Greek of the New Testament published in 1559 and a new revision of the Old Testament from the 'Liesveltbijbel' that was completed in 1561. This Bible has become known as the Deux-Aes Bible, so named after a note on Nehemiah 3:5, which speaks of the rebuilding of the walls of Jerusalem to which important people did not want to contribute: ‘Deux aes en heeft niet, six cinque en gheeft niet, quater dry die helpen vrij’.

It is a saying taken from a commentary by Luther that, referring to the game of dice, indicates that the poor (deux aes) own nothing, the rich (six and five) give nothing and the middle classes (three and four) are willing to help . This comment was later removed. The 'Deux-Aes Bijbel' remained in use among the Reformed until the 'Statenvertaling' was definitively introduced in the mid-seventeenth century.
