Illustrated with black and white wood engravings by the German artist Engelbert Seibertz (1813-1905). Text in Gothic lettertype (Fraktur). Hardback, bound in industrial red linen book cover with gold-plated lettering.

"Erste Ausgabe der 'Holzschnitt-Edition' von Seibertz' Faustausgabe. 1853 bis 1857 war die 'Prachtausgabe' in Folio mit großen Stahl- und Holzschnitten von Seibertz zu beiden Teilen des 'Faust' erschienen. 1864 kam dann nur 'Faust. Erster Teil' als so genannte "billige Ausgabe" in verkleinertem Format heraus mit den Illustrationen in Holzschnitt. In dieser Ausgabe wurde der Seitertz'sche 'Faust' ungemein populär."
