Antique edition with Dutch translation of Les Misérables (1862) by the French writer Victor Hugo (1802-1885). With table of contents. Hardcover edition in typical late 19th century luxury bindings with decoration and gilt titles.
¶ As early as 1862, two competing translations were published in the Low Countries (one by the lexicographer I.M. Calisch, published by the publisher Nijgh and the other by A. ter Gunne in Deventer under the title 'De verstootenen'). The Cohen Brothers did not mention the name of a translator, but Oosterholt (2018) does indicate that this anonymous edition differs from that of Calisch. Surprisingly rare item: According to NCC, only the Amsterdam University Library has a set.
