Antique travel book by the Rotterdam minister / photographer Johannes Lodewijk 'Louis' Heldring (1852-1923) after his journey through the Holy Land. Illustrated with watercolours by R.J. Hartmann in COLOUR and a map of Palestine. The text previously appeared as 'Brieven uit het Oosten' in the Nederlandsch Dagblad and as a serial in the Rotterdamschen Kerkbode.

¶ The present copy is a unique photobook with 47 celloidin paper print photos, pasted in by the author/photographer, provided with handwritten captions; among others of a Mosque in Samaria, street photos in Nabulus and "Smoking Ladies and Gentlemen in Umkes" [= Umm Qais, Jordan].

The book starts on p. 62 (chapter 'Een woestijnreis'). At the bottom of the spine, the number 2 is printed in gold. This may be one of the three copies that the photographer gave to his children, but it may also be the second part of the gift to his niece Jetje Heldring, of which the first part is preserved by the Amsterdam Rijksmuseum.
