Antique travel book with Dutch translation of 'Sinai und Golgatha: Reise in das Morgenland' (1847) by the German theologian Friedrich Adolf Strauß (1817-1888). Illustrated with 4 steel engravings (including the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem). With table of contents and index.

Bound in a contemporary blue linen 'prachtbandje' with gilded decoration.

¶ Strauss visited the Middle East from the fall of 1844 to the spring of 1846 and subsequently reported on it in his book, which became one of the most popular travel books on Palestine of its time. According to NCC, a new translation by J.J.L. ten Kate appeared in 1867. This RARE first edition however, is NOT present in public collections.
