Antique travel book with Dutch translation of (the first part of) 'Reisen in das Heilige Land [...]' (1858); a report by Theodor Fliedner (1800-1864) of a mission "met vier diakonessen naar Jeruzalem, tot grondlegging van een hospitaal aldaar in maart 1851". With table of contents, introduction by the author and preface by the translator.

Hardback edition. Illustrated with 81 black and white wood engravings and 2 fold-out hand-coloured maps (Canaan and map of Jerusalem). Contains a separate chapter on dancing Dervishes, prices of ship tickets and food and images of, among others, the Mosque of Solimanjeh, the Hagia Sophia, 'an Arab', women with headscarves and burkas, the Omar Mosque and Constantinople (Istanbul).

¶ The German evangelical preacher Georg Heinrich Theodor Fliedner was a social reformer and founder of the Kaiserswerther Diakonie. His work in nursing was groundbreaking for Florence Nightingale, who spent some time in Kaiserswerth in 1850.
