Condition: Good - with some wear. SIGNED by the photographer.

Photo book with texts and eyewitness accounts by three journalists about the shocking events in and around the capital of Gelderland during and after the Battle of the Rhine Bridge and the subsequent evacuation. Illustrated with black and white photos. With a foreword by acting mayor Chris Matser. Cover illustration: B. Ohm [or Bohm?].

The black and white photos by Velp photographer Arnold Bouvet show a desolate, destroyed city next to older photos of what it was like before the battle. Also contains photos by P.J. de Booys. Hardback FIRST EDITION in half-linen binding. A second edition appeared around 1950 in the rebuilt Arnhem itself. This copy with HANDWRITTEN DEDICATION by Bouvet ("In vriendschap") to his colleague photographer Piet de Booys; dated 'Velp, 3-10-1946'.

Resistance hero De Booys (1898-2003) photographed the plundering of Arnhem by the retreating Germans on behalf of 'De Ondergedoken Camera', risking his own life. Less is known about Bouvet. He won a photo prize of the PGEM in 1941 and was a member of the 'Verbond van Nederlandsche Journalisten'. In 1945, quite soon after the Liberation, he published a photo booklet about the fallen Eusebius church ('In een fatale septembernacht').
