¶ Eline Vere was published as a serial in 119 episodes in Het vaderland, from June to December 1888. In 1889 the first edition was published by P.N. van Kampen & Zoon in Amsterdam. Couperus became famous with it overnight. During his lifetime the book was reprinted eight times. An English translation appeared in 1892.
