Collection of 12 essays on the origin of LANGUAGE and words, rituals and the worlds of thought from Eastern and Western philosophy by the Dutch thinker Frits Staal (1930-2012). With a foreword by HARRY MULISCH; bibliography and index.
¶ Staal was professor of philosophy in Amsterdam from 1962 to 1967 and specialized in studies of Vedic rituals and mantras. He also studied Greek and Indian logic, and Sanskrit grammar. Methodologically, Staal was convinced that the entire universe is open to rational inquiry: "Studying something 'irrationally' is refusing to study it."
