The author Alain-Fournier (Henri-Alban Fournier, 1886-1914) was killed near Verdun in the madness of the First World War. The first edition of his masterpiece 'Le Grand Meaulnes' appeared in 1913. It is a monument in French literature and one of the few successful books within the movement of Symbolism.
¶ Artist Richard Nicolaüs Roland Holst (1868-1938) provided this copy with a beautiful impressionistic cover by means of a hand-coloured lithograph and signed the book on the dedication page in pencil. Unique item from the library of his wife Henriëtte Roland Holst (1869-1952) with her initials on the flyleaf. Inlaid is a wrapper of the Algemeen Handelsblad addressed to her that served as a bookmark all those years.
