¶ Gustave Flaubert's (1821-1880) debut was first published in serial form in La Revue de Paris between 1 October 1856 and 15 December 1856. It caused a scandal at the time because of its alleged obscenities, but is now regarded as one of the first modern realistic novels in world literature and the absolute pinnacle of Flaubert's oeuvre.
