¶ 'Uncle Tom's Cabin', issued in 1852, is one of the best-known books in the canon of American literature. The work influenced the prevailing views on slavery. The novel was already published in Dutch in 1853, when the theme was still current in the Low Countries: it was not until 1873 that the Netherlands abolished slavery (in Suriname).
