¶ Erich Maria Remarque fought on the Western Front during the First World War until he was wounded by a grenade in Belgium in 1917. He processed his experiences in this story, which was pre-published in the Vossische Zeitung in 1928. The novel became a huge success; around 1930 the circulation exceeded 1 million copies. The sequel, Der Weg zurück, was published in 1931. In 2022, the book was again filmed by Netflix.
