Schultsz (del. 1783), J.B. Elne (Excudit) and C. Philips Jz (fecit). Boards and spine covered with contemporary decorative paper.

¶ Hugo de Groot is known for his imprisonment from 1619 in- and his spectacular escape via a chest from Loevestein Castle in 1621. But he is also the author of 'De iure belli ac pacis' (On the law of war and peace) from 1625 (the basis for modern international law) and the 'Mare Liberum' (1609); his plea for free access to the sea (and free trade); the 'Freedom of Navigation'.

There are currently three museums in the Netherlands that exhibit THE book chest, including Loevestein and Museum Prinsenhof in Delft. The chest from the possession of mr. Jacob Klinkhamer (1738-1817) as depicted in this book, is kept in the Amsterdam Rijksmuseum.
