Antique edition with Dutch translation (by Samuel van den Bergh, 1814-1868) of 'Reineke Fuchs dem Originale frei nachgedichtet' (1855) by Julius Eduard Hartmann (1821-1892). With table of contents and list of illustrations.

¶ Illustrated with 37 steel engravings after drawings by the German illustrator Henrik Leutemann (1824-1905). Bound in contemporary half-leather binding with decorative paper boards. The first edition appeared in 1865.

The medieval epic animal poem Van den vos Reynaerde is based on the Latin 'Ysengrimus' and was written between 1257 and 1271 by a certain "Willem die Madoc maakte". An older version of the fable is the early 13th-century French 'Roman de Renart'.
