Condition: Excellent.
Photobook with reproduction of more than 130 sepia photos of the Pasuruan residence on Java, made at the end of the 19th century by the Salzwedel company from Surabaya. With separate chapter by Steven Wachlin about this photo studio and a foreword by Peter van Zonneveld.
Hardback edition. The photos were kept for more than 100 years by the heirs of resident André Salmon (1844-1901), who received the collection from friends and colleagues upon his departure. Contains images of the cities of Bangil and Malan, natives, rich Chinese, opium users, soldiers and workers on the sugar and coffee plantations.
¶ Louis Couperus wrote his famous novel De Stille Kracht here around 1900. The way he described Laboewangi, "het doodstille plaatsje van Indisch-binnenlandsche sluimering", fits in seamlessly with the pictures in this book.
