Condition: Good - a very nice copy in appearance, but the "prijsvraagkaart" is missing (as usual) and with a small contemporary signature of the previous owner. who also entered the author's name in the appropriate place at the back of the booklet.

Book Week Gift 1950. Originally published anonymously, a novella about a miscarriage of justice. Illuminated with black and white drawings (and cover illustration) by Kees Kelfkens (1919-1986). The back cover should contain the "prijsvraagkaart" [contest card].

¶ The booklet was given out free with the purchase of Fl 3.50 worth of books. Circulation: 130,000 copies. Willem Frederik Hermans had also submitted a story, but the jury still chose the entry by Marianne Philips (1886-1951), who was already seriously ill at the time. [Cf. De Bakker p.
