Two-volume antiquarian reference book of the French church historian Jean Hermant (1650-1725) with a description of almost 80 religious and military orders with their history, date of foundation, details, etc. Illustrated with frontispiece by A. Humblot and more than 80 wood engravings of the emblems and insignia. With table of contents. Text in French.

Bound in two full leather bindings with gilded title and 5 raised bands on the spine. The first edition appeared in 1698. This is the rare 3rd expanded edition of one of the first books devoted to knighthoods. Cf. Saffroy I.3719; Caillet # 5087 (2nd edition of 1704); Not in Dorbon.
