[Samuel Lankhout] - Gezicht op Arnhem / Vue d'Arnhem - La Haye - S. Lankhout & Co. - [ca 1880] - Lithography on paper - 41,5 x 31 cm.
Condition: Good - still preserved in the original cover. On the left (only in the margin) a small tear.
Antique print with a view of the Gelderland capital. Bottom right with numerator numbered (# 1388). Prints of this kind were sold separately as souvenirs. The colour version (chromolithography) was more expensive to make.
View of the Arnhem city walls and the river Rhine as seen from the west (Oosterbeek). In the middle part we see houses and in the center the tower of the Eusebiuskerk (church). On the left a mill, on the right the flood plains of Meinerswijk (with some buildings; a brick factory?). Several sailing ships are visible on the river itself, as well as the old ship bridge. In the foreground, among others, some ladies and gentlemen on the walk (tourists?). A beautiful Dutch cloudy sky completes the idyllic picture.
¶ The Hague publisher and lithography company S. Lankhout & Co was active between 1878 and 1903. The founder Samuel Lankhout (1826-1894) worked from 1857 as a lithographer at the Topographical Institute of the Ministry of War. We can assume that he carved this view in stone, possibly following a drawing by an artist unknown to us.
In any case, this is an exceptionally beautiful print, preserved in the original paper cover in which it must have been sold at the end of the 19th century. Reason for us to leave it intact, as it is. Nevertheless, it is worth considering having the piece framed; the picture is definitely worth to be admired at a wall. Rare piece!
