Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919) became the 26th president of the United States, after the assassination of William McKinley in September 1901. He was 'in office' as a Republican from 1901 to 1909. The 'teddy bear' was named after him (an avid hunter). He is immortalized on Mount Rushmore along with George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Abraham Lincoln.

"The men who do evil in the name of patriotism [...] are but a small minority in a class which has always existed and will always exist; the class of hypocrites and demagogues; the class which quickly appropriates the words of righteousness and puts them to the service of evil"
