Bilingual 18th century publication (Text in Dutch and French) about Drenthe snake species by Mr. Johannes van Lier (1726-1799); one of the first Dutch scientific researchers. The 'Uitlegging van de tytelplaat' is a poem by Barbara Maria van Lier. Illustrated with frontispiece medallion author's portrait and three hand-colored copper engravings by J.C Philips, after W. Veleman, Groningen. 1. Slange; 2. Adder; 3. Hazelworm. Bound in contemporary half-leather book binding.

¶ Interesting detail: The author was Recipient General for the taxes in Assen, but apparently spent more time on nature research. In 1785 a large budget deficit was discovered and Mr. Van Lier disappeared abroad without a trace... Cf. Landwehr 113 : "Extensive work, dealing with snakes and vipers found in the Eastern part of Holland e.g. the Province of Drenthe".
