Antiquarian edition of this original adventure novel about a moon trip with a hot air balloon, by the Dutch writer Willem Bilderdijk (1756-1831). The book is considered to be the first Dutch Science Fiction story (published more than 50 years before Jules Verne's 'De la Terre à la Lune'). cf. Buisman 172; Fantasfeer 290.
¶ This copy (with stamps and the name of the writer in contemporary handwriting on the title page) was traditionally restored by master bookbinder Hans Zegveld from Nijmegen. The cover consists of antique handmade paper on which Zegveld has applied an 18th century print of the moon by means of laser printing. The picture is taken from Jacques-François Dicquemare, 'Idée générale de l'astronomie' (1769). Very desirable item.
