Antique 19th century travel book with an account of the journey that the British artist William Henry Bartlett (1809-1854) made from Egypt to the Holy Land (Palestine and Israel). Illustrated with 25 black and white steel engravings including engraved title page (by J.C. Bentley, E. Brandard and A. Wilmore), 2 maps (one of which is fold-out; 'Map of Arabia Petraea') and 15 plates in the text. With list of illustrations and advertisements for other books by the publisher. Hardback edition. Cf. ¶ Bartlett travelled in October-December 1845 from Cairo, along the eastern side of the Gulf of Suez to Mount Serbal, then eastwards to the Gulf of Aqaba and northwards to Petra; the biblical road of Moses and the Israelites to the Promised Land. The book contains illustrations of oases and camels, 'El Khusné' (rock temple of Petra), St. Catherine's Monastery, Egyptian hieroglyphs and the PYRAMID OF GIZA.
