Antique travel book of the Holy Land Palestine by the American missionary William McClure Thomson (1806-1894). Illustrated with 12 chromolitho's (lithographs in colour), numerous black and white prints in the text and 2 maps (one fold-out; Palestine). With index of names, subjects and Bible texts.

¶ Bound in blue linen book binding with gilded decoration. Contains images of Jerusalem, the Omar Mosque, Bethlehem, Mont Carmel, an Arab woman with tattooed hands, water pipes, a sarcophagus, storks, a pelican, a waterspout, a musician and dancers in Gaza.

This book, first published in 1859, was one of the biggest bestsellers in America in the second half of the 19th century. Only Harriet Beecher Stowe's 'Uncle Tom's Cabin' sold more copies.
